“I thoroughly immersed myself into the Papuan culture, most of the time not speaking the language but communicating by gesture. I may no longer remember how many “thank you’s” I learned in local dialects, but I will never forget that these hospitable families were as glad to welcome a stranger and share their everyday life as I was thankful and delighted to be in their home. It is for these sensitive, generous and unique people that I have done my utmost to express their culture and the passion and dedication with which they preserve and worship tradition. Hopefully my pictures will stand as a testimony of unknown, and unfortunately rapidly disappearing cultures and raise awareness not only of their beauty but also of the necessity to preserve them.”
